Year 11 Mock InterviewsThursday, 26 January 2012 10:08
Year 11 Mock Interviews- This year’s EBP (Education Business Partnership) Mock Interview Programme took place on the 24th and 25th January 2012. The aim of this programme is to prepare pupils in Year 11 for interviews, either when they apply for a Saturday job, or for when they go to University, or go onto Further Education.
This has to be one of the most beneficial EBP events that we run.
The objective is to make pupils feel more at ease in an interview situation, and familiarise them with the whole interview process. All the girls completed an application form as if they were applying for a particular job. The benefits of this were for them to practice completing the application forms and increase their confidence, whilst developing their interpersonal skills. Another benefit is being able to improve on their literacy skills in communication and to understand the importance of the quality of the application form.
The Mock Interview Programme is run over a period of two days. The interviewers are people from local organisations who give up their own time to assist with this event. We were successful in interviewing all our Year 11 pupils. The feedback was excellent, and everyone commented on how well the girls did, and how this has been a great opportunity for them. All pupils who participated will be able to put a copy of their interview feedback form into their Progress File.
Mrs Ann LewisThursday, 19 January 2012 15:56
Mrs Ann Lewis - Our school community was saddened to hear that Mrs Ann Lewis, our former Head of Art and Design, had passed away after a long illness.
Mrs Lewis retired last summer, due to ill health, after 25 years of loyal service to the school. Mrs Lewis was an outstanding teacher and Head of Department. Her support for the girls in her care was second to none and she will be missed greatly. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.
Science Workshops Tuesday, 17 January 2012 09:16
Science Workshops- On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Techniquest visited our school with a mobile planetarium and provided workshops on Earth and Space for our Year 9 pupils. These workshops form part of the 'Raising the Heights' programme funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, which most of the year groups are involved in. This programme is aimed at raising the profile of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics amongst pupils, especially females. The pupils were able to take a look at the night sky, whilst receiving a detailed and very interesting commentary about it. Following this they learnt about space missions and were even given the opportunity to design a space craft. The pupils who took part in this activity thoroughly enjoyed it and gained a good understanding of the need for Space missions in order to discover more about the solar system and beyond.
Mock GCSE Results Day Tuesday, 17 January 2012 09:16
Mock GCSE Results Day– On Monday 9th January we held our Mock Results Day for Year 11 pupils. The pupils received their results just as they will in the summer. Most pupils had achieved very well and are working well towards their target grades. Others now realise they have to work hard to fulfil their potential in the final examinations. We wish all pupils undertaking examinations this year all the very best as they start 2012.

Carols for ChristmasMonday, 19 December 2011 15:02
Carols for Christmas – This week has been extremely busy for our choir as they have not only been singing carols in the Aberdare College Carol Service, but have also entertained patients at Aberdare Hospital and the 6th form members have sung carols and delivered presents to residents at the Tegfan Nursing Home. Many thanks go to Mr Juliff and Mrs Hendy for helping the girls and for organising these festive events.
Carol Service – Tuesday 13th December saw our annual Carol Service being held at St Elvan’s Church in Aberdare. Despite the wintery weather the service was well attended and the various items were appreciated by all. The musical items were delightful and certainly set the atmosphere for the festive season. The readings were also a joy in telling of the Christmas message. It was a fitting end to a very successful evening that so many parents and friends stayed behind in the church for mince pies and mulled wine. Again many thanks go to all the staff who organised the service and for all the pupils who willingly gave of their time to take part.
Bag PackingMonday, 19 December 2011 15:01
Bag Packing – On Monday 19th December, both our choirs and the 6th form will be singing carols and bag packing at Tesco in Aberdare. We thank the community in advance for your support in raising money and hope that they bring some festive cheer to your shopping experience!

Disney trip - November saw the 19th annual visit of lower school pupils to Disneyland Paris. 59 pupils and staff enjoyed an action packed 2 days visiting the theme parks at Disney, to celebrate Christmas. The trip also included a sightseeing tour of Paris visiting the Eiffel Tower. It was a tiring trip, but one that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Many thanks go to Mrs A Fitzgerald for organising such a wonderful experience for the girls.
Friends of the School Christmas shopping tripMonday, 12 December 2011 08:53
Friends of the School Christmas shopping trip - Staff and parents spent a weekend Christmas shopping in Aachen Germany. As always great fun was had by all. This year saw the annual Christmas market trip take a break from France to sample the delights of Germany. We all savoured the gingerbread, bratwurst and of course gluwein (German mulled wine) in the market place that had well over 100 stalls. The trip was rounded off by a visit to Cite Europe for even more shopping on Sunday. Sound like fun? Look out for details of next year’s trip to Cologne; details are available from Mrs A Fitzgerald at the school.
Year 10 Exploring BusinessMonday, 12 December 2011 08:52
Year 10 Exploring Business- The Exploring Business event involved four organisations (RAF; The Red Cross; RCT Homes and Army Careers) visiting the school, giving up their spare time and spending the morning with Year 10. All Year 10 stayed in their form groups for the morning. During this time the visitors talked to their group about what their organisation does and what their individual jobs involve on a daily basis. Once the visitor had given all the relevant information to their group, the groups then completed their work booklets and produced a poster on what they had learned. Each group then presented their findings to the class in a form of a presentation, with props and combat equipment. The winner from each of the groups then went around all the classrooms to give their presentations.Year 10 all worked very hard, but most of all had fun whilst using their Key Skills.
Oh Yes We Did!Monday, 12 December 2011 08:52
Oh Yes We Did!- On Thursday 8th December the majority of girls in years 7 and 8 went to Aberdare Coliseum to see the pantomime Cinderella. It was a packed house with plenty of atmosphere. It was an amazing show with great characters, colourful costumes and staging. We especially enjoyed Alex Winters as Buttons and also the two ugly sisters played by Frank Vickery and Simon Nehan. The jokes were funny, the songs were great and we all enjoyed singing along. Aberdare Girls’ School got a special mention at the end and Buttons said our school gave the loudest cheer. It put us all in the Christmas spirit and we had an absolutely fantastic time. Thanks go to Miss S Davies for organising this event.
ICT ProjectWednesday, 30 November 2011 08:48
ICT Project– Last Thursday and Friday all the year 6 girls from our Cluster Primary Schools were invited to our school to take part in an ICT event organised by Mr P Harris, our Head of ICT and Business. Pupils learnt new ICT packages and over the 2 days they had to produce a mock up of a new health bar. They had to market and advertise their bar before presenting their work to the panel of judges. The best school won a digital camcorder donated by Astrix. The winning school was Cwmdare Primary, closely followed by Penywaun Primary in 2nd place. Miss Rosser and Miss Davies will be attending Cwmdare Primary to present the camcorder to the winning team.
The Sport of ReadingWednesday, 30 November 2011 08:46
The Sport of Reading- The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years. Quizzes are held in New Zealand, the UK, South Africa, Canada and China. The winning team from each heat competes in a national final. National champions compete in the World Final.
For the first time ever, a team of four year 8 pupils from Aberdare Girls’ School; Bethan Watts, Serena Jonathan, Stephanie Garside and Tegan Morgan, entered the South Wales’ heats at Howell’s School, Cardiff on November 23rd, 2011. The quiz was held in the spectacular Main Hall and involved 24 teams from different schools. The atmosphere was electric as the teams battled it out for a chance to win a place in the National Final, answering questions from the following 10 categories; Pirates, Powers, Rats & Mice, Royalty, Sea Animals, Ships, Superheroes, Symbols, Time and Transport. Team AGS had worked really hard to prepare for the quiz and were rewarded by a final score of 64 points, to come 10th out of 24. They were a credit to themselves, their school and their families, behaving impeccably, showcasing their literary knowledge and thoroughly enjoying the experience. The Kids Lit Quiz really puts reading on the map for young people and we look forward to entering another team in 2012. This will be the year of the London Olympics and the participants will be highlighting the importance of the sport of reading. Many thanks go to Mrs Judi Davies, our school librarian for preparing the pupils and entering them into this marvellous event.
CERN TalkMonday, 28 November 2011 10:14
CERN Talk - With CERN at the forefront of most scientists minds at the moment, with the hunt being on for the definitive proof of Neutrinos that travels faster than light, a selection of pupils from the 6th form had the opportunity to meet Dr Lyn Evans one of the project leaders involved with the development of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. At this very moment investigations are being conducted to see whether a critical part of Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is actually correct. The pupils were given an enthralling talk on what is actually happening at CERN at the moment and how this could change the course of Physics forever! With Dr Evans actually coming from Aberdare, it was an excellent chance for the students to meet someone from their local community who after hard work and perseverance has become one of the top Physicists in the world! In total 11 students from Aberdare Girls’ attended alongside other pupils from Aberdare High and St. Johns, all of whom showed great delight in listening to Dr Evans speak about Particle Physics and its implications, including maybe even the chance of time-travel. Encouraging young students, especially girls, into Physics is a difficult task but with such an important figure from the Science world coming from Aberdare, it was inspiring to all the pupils to see what they might be able to achieve in the future!
AdventMonday, 28 November 2011 10:13
Advent – It was our pleasure on Monday and Tuesday this week to welcome Father Robert Davies to our whole school assemblies to speak to the pupils about Advent and the importance of being prepared for Christmas. We really appreciate Father Robert giving of his time to come to speak to the pupils.
EBP Work MattersMonday, 28 November 2011 10:13
EBP Work Matters- The Work Matters event on Tuesday 22nd November involved local businesses visiting the school, giving up their spare time and spending the morning with Year 7. During this time each employee presented information to the pupils about their Employer, any history about the company and discussed with Year 7 what their job role involves on a day to day basis.
At the end of the morning, each class gave a presentation on their findings. The best presentation from each class was chosen and the three groups went into the hall to do their final presentation to whole year group. All the presentations were very good. Well done Year 7!
Police QuizMonday, 28 November 2011 10:12
Police Quiz– On Friday 18th November, four of our Year 8 pupils participated in the RCT Police Quiz at the Abercwmboi Rugby Club. The girls had to learn a lot of information beforehand and it was a close competition. Although not successful on this occasion, the girls did themselves and the school proud. Well done to the team and to the other pupils in year 8 who helped them prepare and who came to support. Our congratulations also go the winning team from Y Pant School and we wish them all the best for the next round.
